Geyser repair or replacement: questions before you book

Prepare for a geyser assessment, check the manufacturer’s warranty process and compare the full repair or replacement scope.

Start with an assessment

No hot water or a visible leak is a reason to have the geyser assessed; it is not enough information to choose a replacement yourself. Tell the plumber what you noticed, when it started and where the water appears. Ask for a written finding that identifies the affected component and explains the recommended work.

This guide helps you prepare a booking and compare quotations. It is not an installation or electrical repair guide. Do not open electrical covers or climb into unsafe roof spaces to collect information.

Check the warranty before authorising work

If you already have a safe, accessible record of the make, serial number, size, purchase date or installation invoice, have it ready. Kwikot’s service process asks for geyser identification and may require purchase and installation proof when the serial tag is unavailable.

For a Kwikot unit, check the manufacturer’s current warranty terms and contact its service team before arranging work that you expect it to cover. Its published guidance places conditions on parts and authorised repairs. Other manufacturers have their own terms; an installer’s verbal assurance is not confirmation that a claim has been accepted.

Compare a complete scope

If repair and replacement are both proposed, ask each supplier to explain the diagnosis, what their price includes and what remains excluded. For a replacement, specify the model and capacity in the written quote rather than comparing two unexplained totals.

  • Diagnosis and reason for the proposed work
  • Parts or replacement unit with model and capacity
  • Labour and any separate electrical work
  • Access work and removal of the old unit
  • Assessment of existing installation components
  • Required documentation and who supplies it
  • Warranty terms and the next step if the fault returns

Confirm the appointment directly

Use the shortlist to find a business to contact, then confirm that it handles your type of geyser and serves your address. Ask when someone can attend and what the assessment costs. A listed phone number is a contact option, not a confirmed appointment.

If a manufacturer, insurer, landlord or managing agent is involved, ask that party about its approval process before committing to work you expect it to arrange or pay for. Keep the reference number and written response with the quote.
